Babysitters: options
1. Babysitters paid by the hour
Working as a babysitter (canguro) is a popular money-earner with
Spanish teenagers and students. You can find girls who are keen
to baby-sit for a few hours; this can be a fixed arrangement for
a specific day of the week. If you want to go out in the
evening, late nights are no problem (They are used to being up
late anyway, as is the Spanish habit). Many of them have mopeds
so can make their own way home. Otherwise you can pay taxi fare:
you do not need to take them home yourself.
2. Full-time help Many Spanish
families have full-time (often live-in) help with the children
and the household. This is especially true if both parents are
working professionals.
Many of these “empleadas de hogar” are from Central and South
America or the Philippines (the latter are more likely to speak
some English). They come to Spain, leaving their families behind
(quite often including small children), intending to stay for a
few years to earn money and then return home. They often have
professional qualifications, but in Spain they accept domestic
work because it is where the demand is.
The pay is around 600€ per month plus health insurance or
Seguridad Social usually with board included.
You can also employ someone part-time (half-day) which costs
around
350-400€. However if you do employ someone part-time you must
realise that as soon as they are offered a full-time job they
could leave you in the lurch. They often ask for a (permanent)
job-contract because this gives them the right to a permanent
residence permit.
Spanish Babysitters
Having a Spanish-speaking babysitter for your children is a
good way to help them pick up the language quickly. Playing is
much more fun than learning lists of vocabulary!
Ask your friends and acquaintances for recommendations. Often in
local shops (especially, for some reason, the bread-shop!) you
see babysitters advertising their services: you could ask the
shop-owner if they know them personally. Perhaps there is a
teenager/student among your neighbours whom you could approach?
What is the hourly rate for a babysitter?
Private babysitters can be divided into two groups:
For babysitters up to 18 (who should be given a lift home if
they have no transport of their own) the average is 4-6 € per
hour; for those over 18 around. 7-8€ per hour (plus fare for bus
or metro).
There is no accepted rate for a whole night: you must negotiate.
The average seems to be 30 to 40 €.
