POSTAL / MAIL SERVICES
Postal/Mail Services
Main Post Office
Plaza Antonio Lopez s/n Barcelona (at the end of Via Laietana,
near the port)
Ph: 93 486 80 50 This office is open daily from 8.00am to 9.30pm
except Sunday.
District Post Offices
There are district post offices in each post code area. (They
have the yellow Correos sign – a post-horn- outside to help
identify them). Here you can send parcels, buy stamps, collect
COD items etc. Each post code also has (sometimes at a different
location) a sorting office (centro de reparto) with a counter
for collecting mail which cannot be delivered to your address (heavy
and oversize items, recorded delivery or items bearing customs
labels) A notification form is left in your post-box; it gives
you the address of the sorting office and the opening times. You
normally have 15 days to collect the item after notification.
Try to make sure such items do not arrive while you are on
holiday esp. in August, as after 15 days they are returned to
sender. To collect an item you must show your passport or
residence permit to identify yourself.
Opening times of offices:
Mon- Fri 8.30am- 8.30pm Sat. 9.30am- 1pm (August weekday closing:
2pm)
Postal Rates:
The inland postal rate is currently 0.25 Euros. For Europe the
rate is 0.50Euros; for the rest of the world it is 0.75 Euros.
This is for standard-size rectangular envelopes (normalizado) up
to 20g in weight.
For larger/square items the rate is as for 50g and this is more
than double the basic rate (1.16 Euros for Europe and 1.63 Euros
worldwide).
International rates for heavier letters, small packets and
parcels are also much more expensive than elsewhere, small
packet rate amazingly so (twice letter rate). Rules about
packaging are confusing and inconsistent; the idea of re-using a
jiffy-bag (even once) appals!.
Stamps
You can buy stamps at post offices and also at tobacconists’
(estancos). These are recognisable by their burgundy and gold
“T” sign outside. They are open until approx.8pm on weekdays and
also on Saturday mornings; most close for lunch. There are
estancos in branches of El Corte Inglés with store opening
times.
Post Boxes
Post boxes for ordinary mail are yellow. The red boxes are for
urgent (surcharged) mail only.
Delivery Times
These vary considerably, being much quicker in the city of
Barcelona than in the surrounding towns. In fact delivery from
Western Europe is often quicker than from other parts of Spain.
The average is 3-4 days. Post from the US normally enters Spain
in Madrid and delivery time is more variable. It can take
anything up to 2-3 weeks, especially for bulkier items.
