Ciutat Vella, or the Old Town, includes three different areas; El Raval, Barri Gotic, and Born. These neighborhoods are the heart of the city, and here you can find all the social classes and all ethnic groups living, working and relaxing together. A steady flow of new immigrants coming from all parts of the world mix with young business people and artistic types as well as traditional catalan families.

Barcelona council has spent considerably in redeveloping the zone, especially in the once seedy Raval area, and it seems to have paid off handsomely, increasing the value of properties in the neighbourhood, as well cutting back the crime and expanding the amount of green areas. More so than other neighbourhoods in the city centre, the area is very lively, and is home to innumberable bars, restaurants and cafés with terraces, cinemas, plus some of the finest music venues in the world in the Gran Teatre del Liceu Opera house, and the beautiful Palau del la Música, a modernist masterpiece that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s also the historic centre of the city, full of monuments, museums, art galleries and churches. There are many Plazas, or squares, such as the “Plaça Reial”, “Plaça del Pi”, “Plaça de Sant Felip Neri”, “Plaça de les Olles”, which conserve the charm of old Barcelona, and are the perfect spot to sit back and watch the world go by. There is also a pedestrianised business district within the zone which offers the best shopping experience, especially when coupled with the old-world charm of the many smaller, more intimate boutiques scattered amongst the narrow lanes and alleyways, like C. Avinyo.

Slight drawbacks for the area are that the narrow streets can cause traffic problems and the many of buildings do not have an elevator or car parking. This neighbourhood benefits from many completely restored apartments.

	Shopping district par excellence. The streets Portaferrissa, The Ramblas, Santa Ana, Portal de l´Àngel host hundreds of fashion and shoe stores. In the adjacent streets to “Passeig del the Born” are located the most fashionable shops in Barcelona.
