Eixample, which means 'estension' is a neighbourhood designed by Ildefons Cerdà in the mid to late 19th century. Thanks in great part to his skill, and vision, as an urban planner, and his fondness for straight lines, it is easy to orientate yourself as all streets are organised into a grid layout, with each block boasting an inner courtyard. Eixample is the most central neighborhood of the city, and is famous for being home to the majority of Barcelona's Art Nouveau masterpieces, an area where Gaudi's creativity is always in evidence.

There are also many newly built buildings, offices, markets, restaurants, hotels, cinemas and international designer stores. As you would expect of a thriving commercial centre, the transport links are very good and reach out to every other part of the city. It is the central business district of the city where the Stock Exchange of Barcelona and banks main offices are located.

Eixample is the cradle of the Catalonian modernism, and within it's spacious streets the most representative buildings are found, including Antoni Gaudí’s “Sagrada Familia”, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and many more.
