Barcelona Real Estate Guide to Gracia
Until the late 19th century, the neighbourhood of Gracia was actually a separate town, outside Barcelona's boundaries.
Even now that sense of idependence prevails, and locals are wont to describe themselves as from Gracia, rather than from
Barcelona. It has always been famous for being bohemian, and today there is a healthy mix of artists, artesans, and musicians
making up the city's biggest blend of ethnic groups.
Much of the area is semi pedestrianised with narrow
streets, Gracia is also famous for it's many "plazas"
packed with with bars and restaurants - in fact, there
are more foreign restaurants in Gracia than in any
of the other Barcelona barrios. It is also home to
many cinemas, including one that shows all movies
in their original version.
Gracia benefits from being quite close to the city centre, yet still remaining a
relatively quiet neighbourhood. A moped is ideal as a means of transport
here. To get a feel for the neighborhood, you could do worse than spend time in any of the many
Squares such as the famous Plaça del Sol, Plaça de Rius i Taulet, Plaça de la Virreina,
Plaça de la Revolució, and Plaça Del
Diamant, all full of bars with terraces.
The highlight of the Gracia social calendar is the great festival of the neighbourhood
in August, during which period the streets truly come alive, with shows and live music in every corner.
