Barcelona Real Estate | Guide to Sant Cugat del Vallés

Sant Cugat del Vallés is a town very near to Barcelona, just 12 km away. Thanks to its strategic location, its excellent transport links with the city, and its extensive parkland, Sant Cugat has become the chosen town for many families that work in Barcelona but prefer to live somewhere more tranquil. It offers new buildings with community areas with pools and gardens, alongside a variety of larger houses, in residential areas in around the old city. Although it has grown in inhabitants and size, Sant Cugat still manages to preserve the essence of a quiet town.

Sant Cugat has different residential zones, all well connected by buses, the different stations of the FGC (Train) and the city center. The larger flats can be found in the Eixample zone (an older residential area in town), and in Golf-Can Trabal (residential zone of the Golf Club of the city). Parc Central and Coll Favà are the newest residential zones of the city, both close to the city center.  Parc Central is a residential zone, Coll Favà has a more commercial feel.   In these zones we find flats with communal areas and terrraced houses. Finally, there are the areas of Valldoreix and Mirasol which were originally summer vacation destinations of Barcelona's residents.

One of the highlights of living in Sant Cugat is access to the Parc de Collserola, a green area covering over 8,000 hectares located between the rivers Besos, Llobregat, the Vallès depression and the Barcelona plain. Locals also enjoy access to the Jardins del Monestir de Sant Cugat. These gardens are planted with Mediterranean vegetation and noble trees that are in perfect harmony with the architecture of the monastery, and cover an area of 15,259 m² around the monastery.

The monastery itself, the ancient Benedictine abbey of Sant Cugat del Vallès, was the most important religious centre in the county of Barcelona. First documented in 878, when it was mentioned that the abbot Ostofred obtained a precept from the Frankish king Louis the Stammerer. The cloister, which was under construction in 1190, bears the hallmark of the master mason Arnau Cadell, who is known to have lived at the monastery. Building work on the present-day church began in the middle of the 12th century and progressed slowly. The façade was completed as late as 1337. The chapel of Sant Benet was decorated in the baroque style by Pasqual B. Savall circa 1688.

Sant Cugat is also home to La Torre Negra, an extremely well-preserved Romanesque military building. It stands three storeys high, is quadrangular in shape and has a square tower attached to one corner of the building. The building dates back to the 12th century, when it was a castle known as Ricanli or Ricard, built during the time of Abbot Ermegol. It is thought to have been rebuilt between the 14th and 15th centuries. Throughout the Middle Ages it was the subject of disputes between the owners and Sant Cugat Monastery, which opposed its construction. It was also the seat of the jurisdiction of the Quadra de Vilanova.
